You Love Your Kid. So Why Does It Feel Like You're Constantly Walking on Eggshells?

There are a few things I know for sure about you.

You love your kid, even if you’re not enjoying them very much right now. You’re trying incredibly hard, and yet too many days still end in guilt, fear, and overwhelm.

Small moments escalate fast:

  • A request becomes a refusal.

  • A reminder becomes a blow-up.

  • A boundary becomes a war.

Suddenly, you’re lecturing, yelling, or threatening consequences you don’t actually want to enforce.

Later, when the house is finally quiet, your brain won’t stop replaying it:

"What if I’ve already failed them?"

"What if they’ll always struggle?"

"What does this say about me as a parent?"

You research, you plan, and you promise yourself you’ll handle it differently next time. But when the next flashpoint hits, the exact same cycle happens.

You can be competent, thoughtful, and regulated everywhere else in your life. But at home, it unravels.

It doesn’t have to stay this way.

Is Your Family System Reaching Its Limit?

This is a family system under strain. It doesn’t mean you failed as a parent. It simply means everyone in the household has hit the edge of their capacity—and it may be time for targeted parenting therapy to build new, sustainable capacity.

Signs Your Family System Needs Support

  • Neurodivergent Wiring: Your child is ADHD, autistic, rejection sensitive, demand avoidantt (PDA), or wired intensely.

  • School or Therapy Refusal: Chronic avoidance, school battles, or "failure to launch" patterns are running the entire household.

  • Explosive Reactions: Frequent meltdowns, shutdowns, or sudden explosive outbursts keep everyone on edge.

  • Power Struggles: Simple requests about hygiene, chores, or screen time instantly turn into screaming matches.

  • Living on Alert: You are constantly on high alert for self-harm, disordered eating, or unsafe lifestyle choices.

  • Co-Parent Division: You and your co-parent are fundamentally divided about limits, expectations, or follow-through.

  • Stalled Progress: Serious conversations about independence, motivation, or the future immediately stall out or explode.

  • The Silence Barrier: Your attempts to help or connect are met with retreat, grunts, or cold silence.

Nobody Prepared You for Parenting at This Stage

When they were little, you could pick them up, strap them in, enforce the consequence, or bribe them with a sticker chart. Your authority had physical and structural weight.

Now they’re bigger, sharper, and more independent.

  • You can’t make them go.

  • You can’t make them talk.

  • You can’t make them care.

So, the pressure inside you rises. You push harder... or you completely give in because you’re terrified of losing the relationship entirely.

Of course you’re scared. Your heart is walking around outside your body, making life-shaping decisions with an unfinished brain. The goal of parenting therapy isn’t to stop being scared—that fear comes with the job. The goal is learning how to keep fear out of the driver’s seat so you can stay connected, calm, and effective.

You will still have the same complex kid, but you will finally know how to move things in the right direction.

Meet Your Parenting Therapist: Becca Gregory, LICSW

Hi, I’mBecca

Hi, I’m Becca. I’m a licensed clinical social worker specializing in parent therapy for ADHD and neurodivergent families.

Parents sometimes wonder something important: I’m not a parent myself.

What I bring instead is sixteen years of intensive professional experience inside the lives of children and families, spanning child welfare, community mental health, and private practice. I’ve sat in living rooms, courtrooms, schools, hospitals, and therapy offices with tweens, teens, and young adults.

  • I’ve seen what helps.

  • I’ve seen what harms.

  • I’ve seen how often parents are left carrying impossible responsibility without the right support.

While many professionals focus solely on treating kids, I am devoted to standing with parents.

I love helping you make sense of what’s happening, untangle the immediate urgency, and lead your home with clarity instead of fear. I’m not here to judge you or automatically side with your child. I am firmly on the side of the relationship—and what actually works in real life.

Standing on the Side of the Relationship

What We Actually Do in Parenting Therapy

Most overwhelmed parents swing between two survival reactions:

Rescue

Over-helping, over-functioning, softening healthy limits, appeasing, and avoiding conflict to keep the peace.

Explosion

Snapping, yelling, lecturing, clamping down, and making empty threats you can't enforce.

And they’re left thinking,
I’ve tried every approach and nothing works.

Both ends of that swing come from the exact same place:Fear.

  • Fear about your child’s future.

  • Fear of losing your parental authority.

  • Fear of getting it wrong.

  • Fear of your child’s distress or rejection.

Before we talk about strategies or tools, we must work with what hijacks your nervous system in the moment.

Parenting tools cannot work when your body is in survival alarm.

Our 3-Step Parenting Therapy Framework

We address the root causes of household conflict systematically so that your best parenting intentions actually translate into real-life changes.

Step 1 —

Reset the Tone at Home

Your ability to influence change with teens and young adults depends entirely on the quality of your relationship.

Create more positive, low-stakes interactions.

Reduce daily flashpoints (like mornings, homework, screens, and curfews).

Safely decide what truly matters versus what is more effective to let go.

Catch escalation loops early and slow them down.

Result: Most parents notice fewer fights, quicker recovery times, and moments of warmth returning.

Step 2 —

Change the Reactions That Hijack You

If what blocks you from using your knowledge and tools doesn’t change, your automatic responses won’t either.

Notice the catastrophic fears that flood in about your child’s future.

Work directly through the persistent guilt and parenting second-guessing.

Untangle the old experiences from your own life that get stirred up by conflict.

Recognize when you are unconsciously moving into fixing, rescuing, or exploding.

Build the capacity to stay steady even when your child is dysregulated.

Result: This is where your automatic reactions start slowing down instead of taking over.

Step 3 —

Get Practical

With more connection and more steadiness, your parental influence can actually work.

Collaborate with your child to build solutions instead of battling over compliance.

Allow your kid to experience natural consequences without rescuing them.

Set clear limits without igniting a power struggle.

Follow through on boundaries without yelling or threatening things you can’t enforce.

Learn to say "no" without drowning in guilt.

Repair the relationship faster when things inevitably go sideways.

You’ll learn how to:

Result: Your child may still be complex, but your voice will carry more weight—without you having to raise it.

What Changes First?

Real progress in parenting therapy doesn't happen all at once. It starts with small, powerful shifts in your daily interactions:

You have brief, 3-minute conversations that aren’t about school, grades, or responsibilities.

Mornings aren't screaming matches, whether your kid makes it to school on time or not.

You are completely clear on where to spend your energy, and where to step back.

You call a conscious pause before saying something you'll regret.

You catch your urge to "fix" a problem before you jump in uninvited.

You can tolerate their tears, anger, or disappointment without backtracking on a boundary.

They begin to actively participate in household change plans.

You make genuine amends instead of tiptoeing around each other for days.

You trust your parenting decisions, even when your child doesn’t like them.

If you’re struggling at home, you don’t need more pressure, another list of standard parenting skills for ADHD, or advice that ignores how neurodivergent nervous systems work.

You need a parenting therapist who helps with the moments where your best intentions get hijacked—so your peace and confidence aren’t held hostage by your child’s mood or choices.

Change at home starts with changing what happens inside you.
